BERCHTA (GERMANIC)

A much-loved goddess of ancient Germanic origins, Berchta, who is also called Perchta, which means “bright,” was the goddess of abundance and protector of the forest, animals, and of babies and children, especially of any unbaptized souls in the afterlife, which she nurtured in her beautiful garden. As goddess of abundance, it is said that offerings please Berchta so much, she returns the favor multiplied many times.

Her name is derived from the birch tree, with which she has a deep connection, along with evergreens, holly, flax, mayflowers, and wild berries. She is said to live among the forest, kept company by the snow, and is often pictured as a beautiful woman wearing a long, flowing white dress and white veil covering her face. Considered a Triple Goddess, she can take the form of maiden, mother, or crone. She often manifests with a webbed, goose-like foot, leading to the theory that she may have been the original Mother Goose. She is celebrated during Yule, a time when she arrives to chase away the cold of winter and to reward women for their hard work and good children with gifts—and punish those children who’ve been naughty.

Call on Berchta when restless ghosts of the past need to be tamed and transported to their final resting place so you can get on with the living, or when your generous spirit may be waning.
